Our history

Trincomalee Campus started its journey in the early nineties as an Affiliated University College (AUC) operating under the umbrella of affiliated colleges funded by the University Grants Commission, opening its doors to whom missed the opportunity to enter the conventional universities. At the very beginning, the Trincomalee Affiliated University College conducted two diploma programmes, Diploma in English and Diploma in Accountancy and Finance. The programmes were launched under the supervision of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura at the initial stage and then later under the supervision of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka.

Subsequently, in the mid-2001, this college got its identity as Trincomalee Campus of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka through a gazette notification with provision for two faculties, Faculty of Communication & Business Studies and Faculty of Applied Science. From the year 2008 onwards the discipline of Siddha Medicine is also introduced as a discipline under the direct purview of the Rector of the Campus.

Establishing the physical education unit of Trincomalee Campus was a concept of the rector, Prof. V. Kanagasingam. He strongly believed that Physical Education is an integral part of the total education process and students should be provided more opportunities to engage with extra- curricular activities such as sports, as engaging with physical activities influences positively for students’ mental and physical health.

According to the suggestion came from the rector, the dream came true in November 2016, with the establishment of the physical education unit and Mr. Lt.P.Krishnaprabu was appointed as the first physical education instructor of the unit. And then gradually the unit was developed and to facilitate the process, the “Sports Advisory Board” was formed in the same year.

In 2017, another milestone was marked by forming “Sports council” and the unit were able to organize its first grand sports event, “Inter-batch championship- 2017”, event was held in February and March 2017 at Campus Premises (Cricket ground and Gymnasium).

Significantly, Hockey was not available in the Eastern University by that time, and the physical education unit of Trincomalee Campus initiated and pioneered to introduce Hockey to the campus with the leadership of physical education instructor. And the campus hockey team participated for inter university tournament, SLAG for the first time. Not only that, but also the female hockey team of the campus was formed for the first time in the history. Apart from that, Inter university chess championship was represented by Trincomalee Campus students for the first time in 2017.

As the Trincomalee campus is a residential campus, students get enough time to engage with different sports activities in the evenings and during the weekends. Importantly, physical education unit caters to all the students regardless their faculty/department they belong.

The Physical education unit of Trincomalee campus tries its best to create a passion for active recreation and sport, assist students in reaching their physical potential in a variety of sporting environments, and to broaden each student’s sporting experience and enjoyment.
